Blurb/Synopsis:

General practitioner Dustin Avarilla has been on the job for a few years—long enough to find out that some doctors, especially his boss, don’t see things the same way he does. Dustin believes that the patients come first, but his boss is more concerned with the bottom line. When Charles Morton brings his very sick niece in right at closing time, Dustin’s care starts trouble with his boss, but touches Charles’s bruised heart.

Charles is nearly frantic when his niece becomes ill. He’s had custody of Anna for only six months, following her parents’ sudden death, and he might be in over his head. Dustin is gentle and caring, which is just what his little patient and her Uncle Cheesy need. Charles feels his focus has to be on Anna, and the last thing he’s looking for is love. Dealing with a new job and town, along with becoming a parent, is almost more than he can handle.

Charles and Dustin meet again at a friend’s party, with heated attraction drawing them closer. One dinner leads to a date, with chemistry building by the second. But Charles’s mother, who feels Anna should be left in her care, and Dustin’s boss, who decides their relationship isn’t up to the family image of the practice, form an unlikely alliance that threatens to pull their budding relationship apart. While alone, they are vulnerable, together they might just get everything they desire.

“I have. And for the record, Amy was the person who introduced me to my last boyfriend. Let’s just say that she’s still apologizing for that lapse in judgement.” Damn, that quirk to his lips was stunning, and Charles found himself watching them, wondering what he tasted like. The air grew warmer for a few seconds, and he swallowed hard, pushing the thought away. But the area continued getting warmer, and Charles’s thoughts wandered as Dustin and Amy continued teasing each other.
“Hey. He really did seem nice. And he was cute and everything,” Amy protested. “It’s not my fault he turned out to be a complete hypochondriac who was looking for a fountain of free medical advice with a boyfriend on the side. How was I supposed to know?” Again, she flashed the innocent look that Charles figured she practiced in the mirror for Dustin’s benefit. “Anyway, I couldn’t help hearing what you were saying because I was right over there listening.”
Both Charles and Dustin met each other’s gazes and cracked up. “You know, I really think I like you,” Charles told Amy. “No one has made me laugh like that in quite a while.” Now that he took a second to think about it, he hadn’t felt this light since the funeral. So much had changed in a short time that he hadn’t had the energy for anything other than getting him and Anna through each day.
Charles checked the time and couldn’t believe how late it was. It had only seemed like minutes since he’d arrived, and yet he’d talked to Dustin for hours. “I really need to get home to Anna so I can tuck her into bed before it gets too late and I’m not able to get her up in the morning.” Charles hugged Amy with a grin. “I can’t wait for dinner, and thank you so much for the invitation.”
Amy hugged him back. “Are you kidding? It’s all part of my nefarious plan to find Dustin a date.” She released him, and Charles looked at Dustin, wishing he was the one hugging him, holding him, pressing him against the wall of the house, kissing him senseless before guiding him inside and… Charles let out a deep breath to calm his imagination as it ran wild.
“You mean, to make up for the last one?” Charles teased, making Dustin chuckle once again. God, he loved that sound, resonant and sexy as hell, especially combined with the smile that shone in his eyes.
“Oh, you and I are going to have so much fun. I just know it. I’ll see you and Anna next Saturday.” Amy stepped back.
“Is there anything I should bring?” Charles asked, checking his watch. He really did need to go.
“Just yourselves,” Amy told him.
Charles said goodbye once again before getting his coat and hurrying out the door. He headed straight home. It was later than he wanted, but Anna would still be awake and he could tuck her in. It had become a routine with the two of them, and one Charles didn’t want to break. No matter what, he was home to tuck Anna in, and that meant that there was something she could count on. With all the changes in her life already, Charles wanted her to know that he wasn’t going anywhere and that she could count on him to be there for her. It didn’t matter if she was bad or did something that upset Charles. She would come to know that his love was unconditional. In the meantime, he could maintain a routine as best he could so Anna knew what to expect and when. He also needed to keep changes to her life to a minimum, and him dating was definitely a change. Maybe he was crazy to even think of going out with Dustin, but he really wanted to. Still, he needed to make sure that as far as Anna was concerned, things stayed the same.
And yet he could still feel the warmth of Dustin’s gaze on him and see his smile. Maybe he really was a fool to want to get to know him. His heart raced as he thought about him. Charles had already thrown a bit of caution to the wind. Now he would see what happened.
